We all grew up with it. Most of us played with it as kids… and some still do to this day. You remember those tiny little blocks of plastic, in different colours with long instruction manuals? Yes, LEGO! It’s a part of all our childhoods, something that’s fascinated man since we could crawl.
Well would you believe that Nathan Sawaya gets paid to still “play” with LEGO. He used to be a corporate lawyer in the past but wanted to refresh his career with building LEGO and now he fills his working hours by building LEGO models as a Master Lego Builder. According to the official requirements, the “role of the master builder is there to design, build, repair and service functions to all LEGO models and animated features within LEGO Land California and selected external locations.”
An apprenticepower LEGO builder?
Well apprenticepower doesn’t offer this kind of training but building construction is one of the apprenticeships they do offer and you never know where you could end up. If your dream is to become an LEGO builder, there are lots of interesting possibilities.
LEGO Land in California is sometimes asking for creative and fresh LEGO builders. Imagination definitely have to be one of your qualities. You can’t take your work too seriously if you’re working with LEGO all day, so LEGO builders also are most of the time kids at heart.
You also can become an independent LEGO builder like Sean Kennedy. He has built commissioned LEGO sculptures for clients like Google and Mazda. Kenney was designing website user interfaces for Lehman Brothers when in 2003 he switched jobs and became a builder.
Kenney worked with LEGO to develop the Certified Professional LEGO building program in 2005. An initial class of three people has since grown to include nine artists and builders. Kenney says that there’s no school to teach on how to become a LEGO professional. The first skills learned in building LEGO will be at master model builders in LEGOLAND theme parks.
