Backyard Blitz has already been part of Jamie Durie’s success story but there’s another Australian with apprenticeship roots whose profile has been launched through this show. When Backyard Blitz premiered in 2000, Scott Cam joined the team as expert builder and carpenter. Since then, he and his Domestic Blitz team have been trying to bring some joy to the lives of some really inspirational families, making some of their dreams come true. The start of Cam co hosting was accompanied by trouble with his former boss Durie but his laid back larrikin attitude made him and his dog Rosie become one of Australia’s most favoured personalities on television today.
For him nothing is more enjoyable than spending his spare time with his family on his farm at Mudgee or having a couple of beers with his mates while camping or fishing. This reflects a lifestyle and personality traits many Australians can identify with. Moreover Cam knows what he’s talking about when it comes to construction and building as he is a skilled tradesman.
Growing up in Bondi, Cam did a three year carpentry apprenticeship with his brother’s business after finishing school at Waverley College. Looking back this time had a massive influence on his future career. After finishing his education Cam set off in an old 4 by 4 car in order to explore his home country and sharpened his trade skills in various fields. His stations included sheep and cattle stations, a remote coastal resort at Exmouth Western Australia, he worked in Fremantle’s docklands and built boats. After years of working and travelling across Australia, he finally settled down in Sydney, married his wife Ann.
In addition to his TV work Cam is author of two books on renovating and building “Out the Back” and “Home Maintenance for Knuckleheads” where he tells you about all the important things around a house our knowledge society seems to have forgotten. In his humorous way Scott gives you tips to fix everything from a broken flyscreen to a blocked toilet. Luckily he included many easy to follow instructions and detailed diagrams for those that have never even held a hammer before. As he has set up his own building business which now employs 4 people he could probably live without all this glamour and publicity simply trusting the skills he has learned being an apprentice.
