A warehouse traineeship is a start to a career in the transport and logistics industry. Through your training, you will discover how a warehouse or distribution base operates. You can gain paid experience with an employer, while continuing to complete your studying.

Who can apply?

  • Students preparing for their first job
  • Mature adults looking to train or retrain
  • People preparing for university studies
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident

How long is the traineeship?

The length of a Warehouse traineeship tends to vary. Typically they start at a year and may continue to three years in length, depending on your career plan.

What skills do I need for warehouse training?

You need:

  • To be reliable, hardworking, enthusiastic and energetic
  • Customer service skills and communication abilities
  • An interest in the transport and automotive industry
  • No formal entry requirements
  • A current drivers license maybe required for some positions

What will I learn?

You’ll be learning how to receive, inspect and move goods when they arrive at the warehouse. You’ll see how to prepare and package items before they are shipped out. You’ll understand what is involved in sales, stock and operations of a warehouse. You will learn how to complete the necessary forms and documentation when items arrive and leave the centre. You may be required to maintain the petty cash flow and keep records or receipts. You may, even, find yourself driving a forklift truck and operating other load shifting equipment to transport items. You’ll be learning how to be safe in this kind of environment. These are just a few things you’ll learn on a warehouse traineeship.

Where can I train?

You can complete the in-class portion at a Registered Training Organisation, contact your closest college or university to apply. The warehouse training practical experience is an off-site component which can be accomplished in a large business warehouse facility or in a small home-based family business as applicable.

The Transport and Logistics Training Package encompasses the first of four courses for warehouse training, each of which provide different aspects of warehouse operations. The courses incorporate new skills and you can gain in confidence through performing and achieving each certification. The practical hours allow you to develop team-working skills, problem solve, gain confidence and knowledge in health and safety of this work environment.

After completing your warehouse traineeship and warehouse training education, just think of the employment possibilities, such as working with a business that stores equipment for staging areas, using your qualification to manage a steel producing warehouse or an airline facility. Looking at your long term career goals, this could be a great step to a Degree or a higher education.
