With any apprenticeship or traineeship, there’s a proper way of leaving your apprenticeship. Below is a list of 6 things to do before your apprenticeship ends.
- Thank people: First and foremost, it is always a good idea to not only thank your employer for the opportunity to apprentice at the establishment, but thank everyone else who helped you along the way. Showing gratitude will leave a good impression on your employers.
- Ask the manager for feedback: Having one of your managers or co-workers give you feedback, maybe some strengths and weaknesses, will give you an opportunity to improve for the next job. Think of it as constructive criticism.
- Talk to people about your future plans: Let your manager and co-workers know what your future plans are, ask them for advice- these are people who have been in your industry for years and can give you a few pointers. They could even be helpful and recommend a job.
- Update your resume: Add the apprenticeship to the resume, along with a reference letter or contact information for references at the apprenticeship.
- Reflect on what you learned from this experience: Think about what you wish you would have done differently and how you would do it differently. More importantly, can you see yourself in that profession? A lot of people work in many different apprenticeships before they find a job that they really love.
- Get contacts & stay in touch: This is probably one of the most important things to do that, surprisingly, not a lot of apprentices do. Send the occasional email to your former managers and co-workers updating them on what you’re up to. In most industries, it’s all about who you know, and keeping a list of professional contacts could help you in the future.
