More Support for Apprenticeships in Australia

Nov 12, in Hints & Tips

As DIY and renovation shows in Australia rise in popularity, one initially unseen effect is the positive impact it has on apprenticeship programs in a range of building and construction fields.

While the television shows generally differ slightly in programming they all usually involve unskilled / untrained contestants competing for a grand prize over a period of time. While many contestants have a passion or interest in the field they are relatively untrained in terms of building and construction.

Once such show is The Block – in which 4 couples compete to renovate a home in a larger apartment block.  Each week the teams are assigned a specific room and budget to work with, they use their planning, design and building skills to design and implement their vision. At the end of the season each house is auctioned off, and the winner decided.

Such TV shows often offer DIY tips throughout the program and are generally aimed at encouraging people to become actively involved in construction projects of their own. The TV shows are often accompanied by contextually relevant ads which generate even further interest in the industry.

Often these DIY and renovation shows impact their viewers in such a way that it encourages them to explore the possibility of entering the industry in a professional capacity.

The only way to become fully qualified in many construction lines of work is through the completion of an apprenticeship program through an authorised and licensed apprenticeship centre.

If you have an interest in developing your skills further, developing a nationally recognised career path contact a local apprentice jobs centre.
