The Role of an Apprentice Plasterer

Feb 16, in Hints & Tips

What is an apprentice plasterer? This is a common question asked of those who are considering going into the field of plastering work. It can certainly be a financially rewarding field, but it will take you some time with diligent study and a few years of on-the-job training to become a fully qualified plasterer.

Is it worth it? Yes, if you like the kind of work. Would it be worth it just for the money? Maybe. Let’s explore what is involved in the role of an apprentice plasterer, as this is where you would spend 3-5 years before you are fully qualified.

1st Year Apprentice Plasterer Wages
The wages of a 1st year apprentice plasterer are generally 35-65% of what a journeyman plasterer will earn, and will vary by geographic area where the services are being provided. Being self-employed as a plasterer can generally produce a higher income, though the work-load may be less steady. When working for a master plasterer or a company providing plastering services, the work will be steady with generally a lower wage (by the hour). An apprentice plasterer will generally enjoy a healthy income compared to many other non-skilled labour trades.

1st Year Apprentice Plaster Working Hours
The work schedule of an apprentice plasterer is competitive with other skilled labour professions. A typical 35-45 hour work week can be expected. If working overtime, a typical overtime rate can be as much as twice the normal hourly rate.  You can expect regular holiday time each year, and if employed by a large company or organisation, you may also expect to receive a full employment benefits program. This is a standard for many companies that you might work for.

The Work of an Apprentice Plasterer
Your typical work as a 1st year apprentice plasterer varies and depends largely on the types of work your master or journeyman plasterer/instructor gives you. There is usually very direct supervision to make sure that the work is done correctly, as well as generous instruction on how to perfect your skills. This is some of the best learning time and most of your learning will be on-the-job as you are doing the work.  This is a very desirable profession that is well-worth considering.  An apprenticeship as a plasterer may very well lead you right into a great career in the building and construction industry where jobs typically are plentiful.
