Preparing for your First Day as an Apprentice Carpenter

Jan 4, in Hints & Tips

As an apprentice carpenter, you will be required to complete tasks assigned to you by a master carpenter. You will receive guidance from master carpenters as your apprenticeship progresses.

Your first day as an apprentice carpenter is very important and you need to prepare for this day.

Here are some tips to help you in preparing for your first day as an apprentice carpenter;

  1. It is always a good idea to ask your employer what tools you will be required to bring on your first day as an apprentice builder. However, some of the common tools that you may require include; a measuring tape, a hammer, a carpenter’s pencil, a nail bag, and a square. Also, for protective purposes you will need safety glasses, steel cap boots as well as ear protection. Since it is likely that you will be working outdoors in the sun, you may require a wide brim hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, long sleeves as well as sun glasses.
  2. Transport may be provided by your employer or you may be required to use your own means of transport. It is important for you as an apprentice builder to find out from your employer in advance whether transport is provided or not. Once you have this information, you have to ensure that you leave early enough so that you are not late for your first day at work.
  3. It is also necessary to have your employer outline what your daily routine will be like. This will be helpful as you prepare for your first day of work because you will know what is expected of you. Be sure to perform tasks assigned to you both on the first day and in the days that follow.

You will also have to ensure that you give a good account of yourself on your first day as an apprentice builder. Ensure that you are accurate in your measurements and calculations in addition to communicating well so that you are able to work both independently and within a team.

If you prepare well for your first day as an apprentice carpenter, you will no doubt enjoy your apprenticeship experience, and be on your way to a successful career.
