If you’re thinking about doing an apprenticeship in the near future but aren’t really sure how or when to get started, you’re not alone. Many people who are thinking about apprenticeships are still in school. Others just don’t know if an apprenticeship would be right for them. Many more are just wondering where to start, and what they should be doing with their time.
If you’re in any of the above situations, listen up.
Probably the most important step in preparing for an apprenticeship goes back to the ancient Greek aphorism “Know thyself.” Knowing who you are, and what you like to do is the quintessential step in determining what sort of apprenticeship you want to pursue. If you have a fear of power tools, then pursuing a carpentry apprenticeship might not be the smartest move for you.
But if you’re struggling with your self discovery, one of the best ways to overcome this is to get out there and give it a go. The best way to determine if you want an apprenticeship is to get your feet a little wet and see what it’d be like. If you’re looking for ideas of how to test the waters their is a number of things you can do to decide if an apprenticeship would be right for you, and also give you some basic fundamental training if you were to pursue that apprenticeship.
Some ideas for prepping for an apprenticeship include:
- Joining a club/hobbyists
- Completing career focused surveys
- Getting a part time job that may relate to the work done in an apprenticeship (ex: Home improvement store)
- Asking family and friends for any connections to the industry
- Interviewing a worker in the field
- Google it
- Pursuing a pre-apprenticeship class

As you become more serious in your searching, you may want to consider enrolling in a pre-apprenticeship class. Pre-apprenticeship classes provide the opportunity for those wishing to gain apprenticeships to complete prerequisite courses relevant to the industry they want to work in.
Pre-apprenticeships are usually targeted at early school leavers and people wishing to pursue a career change. However, anyone wishing to gain insight into an area of interest, or improve their skills can enrol in these courses. In today’s competitive world, pre-apprenticeships are often being encouraged as it is becoming harder to gain apprenticeships without experience. Pre-apprenticeships can sometimes give you a jump start and impress potential employers.
No matter what apprenticeship you decide on, it’s important to remember that you should enjoy what you do. Knowing who you are, what type of work you’ll be doing, and whether you enjoy it or not is a crucial step in living a happier and more fulfilling life.
