National Carpenters Day 2010

Mar 24, in Hints & Tips

Hey Australia, it’s time to celebrate those great people that craft our furniture, frame and clad our houses, lay our floors and build our roofs. The National Carpenter’s Day 2010 is a celebration of Australian carpenters, their work and their contribution to the community. Moreover the Carpenters Day tries to raise awareness of the advantages and benefits of wood as carpenter’s building material. It is one of the most renewable and sustainable materials in the world and can be a big help for facing the problems of climate change as it stores carbon dioxide and prevents new emissions.

This year National Carpenters Day will be celebrated on several BBQ events around Australia on 16th April 2010 . Like in 2009 Australians are encouraged to nominate for the National Carpenter of the year but also for the new category: Australia’s best Apprentice Carpenter. For each category Judges will choose six state finalists one of which one will finally receive the national award. Beside the official title the winners can receive tool packs from Hitachi and Irwin Tools worth $2500 and $850 respectively.

TV personality and carpenter Tom Williams is the official ambassador of this year’s Carpenters Day and underlines the importance of this day:  “It’s a great idea. One of the things about carpenters is that, unlike lots of jobs, once you’ve left TAFE and qualified, there’s no association or anything like that and it’s pretty hard to get together outside business hours. There are opportunities if you go on to become a builder, but not all builders are carpenters – so National Carpenters Day is a chance to get together. And I think it also helps raise the profile of the trade.”

So if you think you know somebody who should become Australia’s Carpenter or Apprentice Carpenter of the year (may be even you?), hurry up! Nominations close at March the 27th. It might also a great chance to get some insights into that trade and learn about wood, so if you think about becoming a carpenter why don’t you give it a try and have a look?
