Mar 11, in Hints & Tips

Mechanical fitter jobs suit people who are technically and mechanically inclined, like problem solving and good with their hands. A mechanical fitter is responsible for assembling and fitting metal parts and other materials involved during equipment and machinery production by welding and brazing.

You are responsible for the planning, designing and overseeing of the machinery’s installation, operation, development and maintenance. All mechanical fitters need to complete engineering apprenticeships.

The production areas and workshops for mechanical fitter jobs are usually dusty, hot and loud. Therefore, you should be in good physical condition when doing this type of work considering that you will be spending most of your day on your feet.

Duties of a Mechanical Fitter

  1. Preparation. Mechanical fitters need to have a thorough knowledge regarding every aspect of the machines they are working on. This is important because you need to know which parts would fit on the machine before starting with the assembly. It is therefore essential for all mechanical fitter jobs that you are able to read and interpret blueprints.
  2. Assembly. After a thorough planning on a project, the mechanical fitter can proceed with the equipment assembly.  You don’t need to assemble each portion of the machinery. Your duties simply involve assembling and fitting parts assigned to you. Mechanical fitter jobs require you to be highly-specialised in specific areas. Special areas of focus include pneumatic pipes, plumbing, hydraulics, electrical, electrical parts or other parts relevant to the machine.
  3. Maintenance. In order to guarantee that machine parts are functioning properly, the mechanical fitter is also responsible for the maintenance of the machine parts assigned. You are required to do a regular inspection to determine if things are working properly. Frequency of inspections usually depends on the employer’s needs.
