Living Away From Home as an Apprentice

Jan 12, in Hints & Tips

At times it may be difficult to find work in your local area and you can solve this problem by living away from home as an apprentice; however, you will also realise that moving from your family home and establishing a new home elsewhere as you start a new job can be quite difficult. Thus, life can be made easier if you can access the living away from home allowance. This is basically a government initiative meant to help apprentices in Australia to move away from their family homes.

The living away from home allowance will come in quite handy if you have to move away from your family or from your legal guardian’s home for the first time to;

  • Take up an Australian apprenticeship
  • Receive supplementary on-the-job training with another employer as may be deemed necessary

You may be eligible for the living away from home allowance if you are homeless. However, you may not be eligible for this allowance if you;

  • Start your Australian apprenticeship 3 months after having moved away from your family home
  • Receive accommodation or rental help from centrelink or an employer
  • Receive assistance in the form of a Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or AuStudy

As an apprentice, in order to get the living away from home allowance, you have to complete and submit an application form to an Australian Apprenticeships Centre. There are many such centres around the country and you should be able to find one in your local area. In addition, you may obtain your application form for the allowance from these centres.

It is important to note that as an apprentice, if you qualify for the living away from home allowance, you will not be required to pay taxes on this allowance. Therefore, if you were hesitant to look for an apprenticeship away from your local area for financial reasons, then you should look into the living away from home allowance. This allowance will help make it easier for you to establish a new home as you work as an apprentice.
