In Your Landscaping Toolbox

Sep 24, in Hints & Tips

Here are some basic tools that you will find very useful while working as a landscaping apprentice. Use this list to prepare your tool box for the first day of your apprenticeship, or stock up with these handy tools to keep around the house for regular yard maintenance tasks.

Shovel: this basic tool will be used regularly for digging and spreading materials.

Square ended shovel: this will make it easier to handle heavy loads of dirt. As well, it can be used to easily distribute loose soil, manure and other fertilisers.

Shears: these are an essential tool needed for shrubbery.

Wheelbarrow: (well, maybe not for in your toolbox but it will be helpful to have one if you can transport it): this will come in handy for transporting soil, dirt, seedlings and other plants and materials.

Chain saw: although not necessary, a chainsaw will make any job easier.

Pruners (especially ratchet pruners): these are necessary when working with trees.

String trimmer (or weed-eater): this is necessary for removing weeds and trimming around houses, fences, walkways and posts. This will be useful when an area needs to be cleaned up and prepared before work can begin.

Electric hedge trimmers: this will be useful for trimming shrubs and bushes. An electrical trimmer will be much faster and easier than shears and pruners.

Hoe: this will be used often for turning up earth and preparing the soil for planting.

Triangular spade: a triangular spade is best for digging large holes for planting and transplanting.

Rake: a rake is necessary to clean up areas you are working on and remove debris. As well, it can be used to work seeds into the soil in small areas and to spread materials such as manure and soil.

Mattock: this helpful tool is used to break up soil for transplanting.

Gloves: these are used for safety purposes, to protect your hands from prickly plants and  to help prevent blisters.
