Daniel Wheat, a 2nd year horticulture apprentice from Perth, got the opportunity of a lifetime to work with professionals and travel overseas to work in a live event, the Singapore Garden Festival. The Singapore Garden festival, which took place this last July, is Asia’s best garden and flower show which showcases creations from the world’s top award winning garden and floral designers. Australia competed in the fantasy category.
Daniel got an email from an apprenticeship board calling for entries, which he entered and won. Along with learning skills on how to setup a display, Daniel also gained a wealth of knowledge about various plants from all over the world.
He loves working with plants and has enjoyed gardening since he was little. He hopes that after his apprenticeship, he could get into environmental science or developing mine sites someday, as it is a big industry in Western Australia.
A career in horticulture is one that offers a diverse range of opportunities, from design and planning, to business and scientific research.
Horticulture is the industry and science of plant cultivation and includes the disciplines of crop production, plant breeding and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, and physiology. There are so many fields to get into with a horticulture apprenticeship and is not just about plants and landscaping.
