Greenkeeper apprenticeships should include work at a golf course. Apprentices should expect to learn that course very well and know the layout of the entire green so that they can make decisions about where to place easy, medium, and difficult holes. They need to know how to take care of plants, how to mow, how to fertilise, and more. Apprentices will also be in charge of sand traps and ponds, keeping these free of plant life and sometimes adding blue dye to ponds to keep them blue.

Greenkeeper jobs require personalities that are easygoing but hardworking. Greenskeepers should know that they will not always get to do things the way they wish they could based on supervisors, playing demands of the course and the players, weather, and more. They also need to be diligent in their tasks otherwise the green will quickly become unplayable. They need to also be creative and trust their instincts, as these will help them place holes and tee markers. Lastly, it is always a bonus for them to be very familiar with golf!
