Getting an apprenticeship may seem like a pretty scary thing. After all, this is the step in your life where you stop dreaming about the infinite potential careers you could have and start narrowing down the possibilities to establish the career that you actually will have. This is why it’s important to choose the apprenticeship program that’s right for you. A good way of determining the apprenticeship that will keep you satisfied and content is to consider what you are trying to get out of a job.
Skills
One of the nice things about committing to an apprenticeship is the fact that you’ll be picking up skills that will be relevant to the rest of your life. You will become a true expert in the field you choose, and will be able to use those skills to your advantage both in your job and outside of it. Therefore, if you are interested in knowing more about how cars work, become a mechanic and you’ll be able to wow your friends with your new-found automotive knowledge. If you’d rather become an expert at fixing any appliance in your house, become an electrician. Apprenticeships are the perfect way to pick up these invaluable speciality skills.
Interests
No one wants to be stuck in a job that doesn’t appeal to their interest at all. Luckily, apprenticeship possibilities are varied enough to keep even the most easily distracted person focused on their work. Before you decide what sort of apprenticeship you would like to do, think about what interests you in your everyday life. If you’re interested in the way machines work, why not become a toolmaker, supplying those machines with the individual elements they need to run smoothly? If you are interested in nature and how things grow, why not become a horticulturist, and learn how to make any environment beautiful, through the use of your newly green thumb? If a career path meshes well with the interests you already know you have, you will be more likely to enjoy your job.
Happiness
This may sound like a bit of a cliché, but this is by the far the most important part of choosing a career. Choose an apprenticeship which will have you waking up excited to go to work and learn something new. Don’t force yourself to do something because you think it’s in your best interest or because your parents think it would be best. Do what makes you happy and you will naturally excel in the apprenticeship field you choose.
