Apprenticeships are a great way to get hands-on experience and a real practical understanding of the field that you are interested in. Like with any new job, when considering an apprenticeship it’s always important to consider the long-term benefits of your chosen career path. Apprenticeships are a great entry point for careers with high competition where you need necessary skills and experience to be employed.
Start applying for apprenticeships in good time, start investigating your alternatives. The best is of course to get an apprenticeship that is close to your dream-job. Talk to people who have done, or are currently doing, an apprenticeship within the same field. Also, talk to people who are working in the job and industry you see yourself working in the future – they’ve been through it all and would have some pretty good insights on the ins and outs of your chosen career path.
Bear in mind that many companies wants an apprentice who is interested and passionate about learning the job rather than having one who just happen to have the right qualifications on a paper. If you really want an apprenticeship in a specific industry, with a specific company – apply for it even if you don’t have all the qualifications. Then it is important to explain your interest and convince the company that you really are the right person for the job.
Don’t forget to ask former teachers, employers or colleagues if they might consider being your references or if they can write an introductory letter. Remember that the best reference is usually someone who knows you well rather than a person with a nice title.
