If you are fascinated by cars and looking to turn your interest into a lifelong career, then an automotive apprenticeship is right for you. An automotive apprenticeship doesn’t just mean becoming an auto mechanic; there are many options for a career after completion of the apprenticeship.

Basically anything that has to do with the design, maintenance, operation, sale or manufacture of automobiles and auto parts is an option for an automobile apprentice. An auto apprenticeship will combine structured training and paid work to give you the practical job experience necessary to succeed in the auto industry. At the end of the 36-48 month apprenticeship period, you will receive a nationally recognisable qualification.

Automotive Repair & Maintenance

This subdivision of the auto industry focuses on mechanical, repair and maintenance services for cars, trucks and motorcycles. It is largely comprised of auto repair businesses that specialise in the repair of auto parts, such as mufflers, brakes, clutches, transmissions, etc. Some auto workers may focus on one or a few particular auto parts. Another specialisation in the auto repair and maintenance segment is the conversion of international motor vehicles to Australian standards.

Automotive Electrical Services

This division is responsible for maintaining the electrical components of automobiles. Electric components, such as electrical alternators and electric fuel injection pumps, are very important to the proper function of motor vehicles. The auto-electrical industry incorporates automotive knowledge with the latest in technology to repair and improve electrical systems in cars.

Automotive Body, Paint, & Interior Repair

Because the appearance of a car is also important, this industry is very much in demand by car owners. This division focuses on painting, body and smash repair, and interior fittings and design of motor vehicles. The main services offered in this segment are repair after an accident to return the car to its former appearance.

Motor Vehicle Manufacturing

This segment of the auto industry manufactures and assembles non-luxury passenger vehicles of 6 or 8 cylinders. There are 4 auto manufacturers with operations in Australia – Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota. There are mechanical, structural, and electrical roles within motor vehicle manufacturing.
