From Apprentice to Famous: Hairstylist Joh Bailey

Apr 13, in Hints & Tips

Joh Bailey is one of Australia’s biggest hair talents with a career spanning over 20 years. With his talent for the locks he has put his brand name at the forefront of the hairdressing industry, not just in Australia but also internationally.

He has worked for Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista, Olivia Newton John, Kerri-Anne Kennerly, Kylie Minogue, Judy Davis and Jill Wran. One of the biggest highlights of Bailey’s career was working with the Princess of Wales, Diana, during her visit to Australia in 1997.

During the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 Joh Bailey was named the official hair stylist for the opening and closing ceremonies. Enough success you would say… but where did this big success story start?

Strangely enough it was his love of horses that led him to his fate of world-famous hair stylist and successful entrepreneur. As a little boy, he discovered his talent while braiding his horses’ manes, and so pursued a career in hairdressing. His passion for horses is still with Joh today.

Bailey said he got his real start in the industry by responding to an ad for a hairdressing apprenticeship in the Sydney Morning Herald and immediately loved the world of hair. “I am as passionate today as I was 20 years ago,” Joh claims.

Bailey also says: “My look is classical and beautiful, whilst always having a modern edge. My signature look of a polished, slick and feminine woman has been instilled into the culture of my staff and salons.”  “There was a time where I believed only I could make your hair look fabulous. And I was right!” Bailey said. But he went on to say, “Now I hand it over to you girls”

Joh Bailey knows first hand how far an apprenticeship can get you. He once started as an apprenticeship and look where he is standing now. As Joh wants to share his passion for hair and show new people the ropes, he is always looking for apprentices in his companies as well. Dynamic, well presented apprentices are frequently required for the Salons in Sydney’s City and the Eastern Suburbs. You have to be interested in the hair and fashion industry, take direction and be inspired from your peers to do your best in a team environment. At Joh Baileys they claim to offer continuous managerial support and a fantastic training.
