Finally you are there, chosen your apprenticeship and happy with the position you’ve just received. This is the position you’ve always wanted. The job you really wanted for several years and now you’ve got it. Finally, you’ve found an apprenticeship you really like, but now what? How do you deal with this first week?
You probably think: yeah but it is a little scary??…Well, there are many ways to go through it successfully. Just leave a good first impression and stay motivated. There are some things you can do right to make sure you will make it through the first day as an apprentice successfully:
- Most important is to rest well before your first day. Make sure you wake up fresh and well rested, so you are in a good mood. This is also better for your concentration during the day to make sure you stay focussed as an apprentice.
- First impressions are really important because it will mark you for the rest of your career as an apprentice. It is all about how you look, how you present yourself and if you have an open attitude. So make sure you dress well, your clothes are clean and you look professional for your host and other apprentices.
- Come in at least 15 minutes earlier then agreed, this will leave a motivated impression. It is also better for your own welfare to come in early so you can take the time to let the first impressions of your apprenticeship get to you.
- Avoid slang and try to speak with two words always (i.e. more than “yes” and “no” answers)
- Try to get to know your work environment, be interested in other apprentices and try not to look smart. Just try to impress as someone who wants to learn from this experience and give other apprentices and your host the feeling they can teach you.
- Be social and let shine through your characteristics. Your colleagues know you are human just like them so don’t be too cold and formal.
- Stay focussed and aware of your environment. You have a lot to deal with on a first day, so try to stay calm and easy going. Take your time to really get to know the apprenticeship and ask questions when necessary.
