Press a button and turn on the computer. Flip a switch and the lights come on. Push a button and nothing happens? Call the electrician! Electrical apprenticeships in NSW are enjoying increasing popularity and for good reasons.

Electricians are the workers behind the electrical power. They are responsible for installing and maintaining the wiring and electrical control equipment in homes and commercial and industrial facilities. Electricians are allowed the luxury of choosing their work environment and can be found working in a wide variety of locations, including construction sites, high rise buildings, oil rigs, airplanes, factories and others.

But being an electrician is more than just hooking wires together. Electrical apprenticeships in NSW require apprentices to learn how to prepare and read blueprints, learn the numerous building and electrical codes to ensure that all work is in compliance, be able to perform complex math calculations, and need to stringently adhere to electrical safety standards. They are also required to master the tasks electricians are expected to know, including the installation and maintenance of equipment, diagnose and repair faulty equipment, conduct inspection to insure all installations are up to code standard, construct and fabricate new parts to specification, supervise job sites, perform emergency repairs due to power outage, provide preliminary job plans and estimates for contractors and clients just to name a few.

Graduates of electrical apprenticeships in NSW will enjoy job stability not found in most other professions. Whether the economy is good or bad, everyone needs electricity! There’s plenty of room for job advancement as well. Experienced electricians can advance to electrical construction supervisors, project managers, and job superintendents. Additional training is also available for electricians wanting to earn the designation of Master Electrician. Experienced electricians are also in demand to fill teaching positions in the classroom.

As with other professions, electrical apprenticeships in NSW allow apprentices to specialise in one of four fields. When people think of electricians, the residential lineman immediately comes to mind. Residential linemen are responsible for installing electrical wiring in new residential homes, and updating and repairing electrical problems in existing homes.

Inside wireman perform the same tasks as the residential lineman but for commercial and industrial buildings. An inside wireman wires everything from high rise buildings to automobile factories, chemical plants — even electrical and nuclear power plants!

Outside Lineman are the ones who make it all happen. They bring the electricity from the power plant to homes, commercial buildings and factories by installing distribution and transmission lines.

Electrical apprenticeship program graduates can choose what type of company to work for and eventually may decide to start their own business. They can work either full or part time in their specialty and still earn an excellent salary.
