As with all Australian Apprentices, electrical apprentices are also paid for the time that they spend training. While electrical apprentice wages, like all other apprentice wages, are less than the wage one they would receive once fully qualified, it is definitely a wage a person can live off.
To help apprentices while they undergo training, State and Federal awards, are provided to set the minimum pay and allowances rates for all the different apprentices, including electrical apprentices. The awards also cover overtime pay and penalty fees that an apprentice might incur. The awards may also state the maximum number of hours that an employee or apprentice will be allowed to work and state the different leave provisions that will be entitled.
Electrical apprentice wages vary depending on many factors including:
- The apprentice’s current level of qualification
- What year the apprentice is currently in
- Whether the apprenticeship is school-based, part time or full time
- The highest level of educational attainment of apprentices
- Previous skills also already possessed by the apprentice also affect electrical apprentice wages.
Employers also recognise a good employee when they see one. That’s why a hardworking and talented apprentice electrician might receive wages which are higher than the minimum. By doing so, employers are able to attract talented candidates and build a strong working relationship with the apprentice. You can actually increase your pay grade by working hard on the job.
Once you finish your apprenticeship, as a fully qualified electrician you will be able to earn an average of $950 to $1200 per week, depending on which sector of the electrical trade you are working in. If you want to work for yourself instead, your earning potential increases significantly.
There are many additional reasons you should consider doing an electrical apprenticeship other than the electrical apprentice wages. If you factor in the national shortage of qualified electricians and the continuing employment growth in the electrical industry, you will have a very bright future as an electrician apprentice and then as a fully qualified apprentice.
