Each year, the Hospitality Training Network (HTN) hosts a competition for Australia’s commercial cookery apprentices. This year, the HTN and Mars Food Australia Apprentice Culinary Competition 2010 has garnered a lot of attention for the talented apprentices involved.
The country has been suffering a skills shortage for chefs, and this event serves to highlight and promote interest in culinary apprenticeships. It offers cooking apprentices an opportunity to test the skills they have learned in their training in a relaxed environment. The competition is judged by experienced professional chefs.
The competition consists of 10 heats that take place at different locations in NSW and the ACT. It is the largest annual commercial cookery competition in Australia. At each heat, there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year gold winner. The gold winners from each heat will move on to compete in the grand final, which takes place on 7 September 2010 at TAFE NSW – Ryde Campus.
Over 280 apprentice chefs have registered to compete in the series this year. Information on the winners of previous heats can be found at www.htn.com.au.
The last heat will be held on 27 July 2010 at TAFE NSW – Baulkham Hills Campus. If you think you have what it takes to compete against the best culinary apprentices, there may be entry slots available for the last heat. The entry form can be found here. There is no entry fee for the competition.
