Are cover letters really necessary? This seems to be the question on everybody’s mind when applying for a job. Cover letters are a good way to introduce yourself and highlight some aspects on your resume that you want your employer to see.
On the other hand, recruiters and employers could get tons of resumes daily and lengthy cover letters would just add to the pile.
It is only necessary to write a cover letter when a recruiter, employer, or job posting requests that you include a cover letter along with your resume.
If it’s not specifically required, cover letters can do more harm than good. If you’re not the best writer, don’t write one!
Most times recruiters will like what they see on the resume, look at the cover letter, and reject applicants because the cover letter was poorly written.
If you do decide to write one, remember that it will be examined and judged on spelling, style, and content.
To make it easy, only write a cover letter if it is required. Make it short and simple.
Include a brief introductory paragraph along with your resume. Explain what position you’re applying for and mention parts of your resume that will show why you are good for the job.
Don’t try and sell yourself. Finish the letter with contact information and availability for an interview.
