You don’t have to follow the crowd and go with the typical apprenticeship like engineering, hospitality, or real estate. Get involved with something you really love. Maybe you like animals, if so look for an apprenticeship at a zoo or an animal hospital. If you love to surf, why not get an apprenticeship building surf boards. The sky is the limit. Create your own apprenticeship.
For Robert Valenti, he did just this. Robert is a master piercer at Polymorph piercing studio in Sydney. He has always been fascinated with body art and modification. As a kid, he was enthralled with pictures of traditional tribes of people from all over the world and would look at the different forms of body art and piercings. As a teenager, Robert landed an apprenticeship with an experienced piercer and worked with him for about 2 years. Today Robert works at the first Australian store to be a member of the Association of Professional Piercers, which is an educational health and safety organisation committed to sharing information about proper body piercing and safety.
Another go-getter who decided to go after what really interested her is Caroline Lee, the owner of 3am Wigs in Sydney. Caroline has developed the skills involved in creating a wig for theatrical productions. She has worked on plays like Cats and Phantom of the Opera. Caroline even acquired an apprentice who was also interested in the craft of wig making. Or for those who don’t know any wig makers, there is a formal way one can develop their skills to be a wigmaker; TAFE offers nationally recognised courses to obtain a certificate IV in entertainment or a diploma of entertainment.
So whether its body modification or wig making, find something that really interests you and go for it. In any field, there are always people that are willing to train apprentices who are eager to learn their profession.
