The Australian Apprenticeship scheme provides opportunities for people to gain industry recognised skills, national qualifications and establish a worthwhile career. The objective of the Australian Apprentice program is to develop a more skilful Australian workforce that delivers long term benefits for our nation and our international competitiveness. This is achieved by encouraging employers to open up opportunities for skill based training of their employees.
Many people are hesitant to start an apprenticeship program because of the costs that come along with it. The Australian Government has introduced a number of initiatives to help with the financial burdens apprentices experience at the beginning of their apprenticeship. These initiatives provide support through the Australian Apprenticeship Initiatives Program.
The Australian Apprenticeship website provides information on the incentives available from the Australian Government. Australian Apprentice Centres are responsible for determining eligibility for these incentives.
Australian Apprentices may be eligible for financial assistance through:
• Tools for your trade payment initiative
• Support for adult Australian apprentice payment initiative
• Living away from home allowance
• Youth allowance, AusStudy, and ABSTUDY
Other assistance programs include:
• Assistance for Australian apprentices with disability
• Australian school-based apprenticeships
• Apprentice kick-start extension
• Securing Australian Apprenticeships
There are also a number of initiatives aimed at increasing the number of Australian Apprenticeships available by providing additional financial incentives to employers. For more information about these incentives visit www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au
