When apprentices start their apprenticeships in construction, they are taking the first steps and laying the foundations on what is sure to be a satisfying career. If you like working with your hands and working on different projects in different environments then you should seriously consider this great career. Apprenticeships in construction are largely project based, your role is very dynamic as there will be different jobs to work on, different environments to enjoy and different people to meet.
Like any other apprentice, you will undergo both offsite and onsite learning. During your offsite training, you will undertake courses related to your trade at a Registered Training Organisation such as TAFE. During these classes, you will gain the theoretical construction and formwork knowledge and skills. You will learn all about, starting a construction project, using the different tools required and handling building materials, to name just a few.
There are also some other related courses that you can take to further improve your trade. You can also learn all about advanced woodwork, furniture restoration, fair trading, general construction, designing and using glaze, and even learning all about passive solar design. As you can see, there is a very wide room for growth in the construction trade even for those taking apprenticeships in construction.
But as with any apprenticeship, your learning won’t all be confined in classrooms. Most of the learning, which can easily translate to both work and fun, is done during your on-the-job training.
During your onsite training, you will be taught the skills of the trade first hand by experienced tradesmen – your apprenticeship supervisor. It is here where you will be able to put to use all of the lessons and theories that you’ve learned during your offsite classes. Tools in hand, you will learn and apply the practical tips as well as the trade secrets from these experienced men and women. And as you grow in skill, your responsibilities will grow as well, until you successfully finish your training and become a qualified tradesman as well.
Apprenticeships in construction can lead to a very rewarding career and numerous job opportunities. As we are constantly building and constructing new buildings, homes, roads, bridges, and other major works, you can always be certain of future job security. Furthermore, as the Australian government is offering numerous financial incentives and support programs for trade apprentices, getting started in your construction apprenticeship is made easier.
