If you are considering starting a joinery apprenticeship, then it is worth noting that you will be required to gain knowledge and skills in occupational health and safety in addition to developing a great understanding of environmental issues.

To become an apprentice joiner you will need to develop a broad range of skills. Such skills include:

  • Skills on how to use static machines as well as computer controlled machinery
  • The manufacturing of windows, doors, stairs and joinery units
  • Designing, setting out and installing joinery units
  • Working from plans and specifications
  • How to use hand and machine tools and equipment to fabricate and install partitions
  • Installing lining, panelling and moulding
  • Assembling partitions

Joinery and carpentry often go hand-in-hand so to become a great apprentice carpenter, you will require the following knowledge and skills:

  • Handling carpentry material, use of carpentry tools as well as equipment
  • How to work effectively and sustainably in the construction industry
  • Planning and organising work effectively
  • How to conduct workplace communication
  • Working safely at heights
  • Reading and interpreting plans and specifications
  • How to carry out measurements and calculations successfully

A joinery apprenticeship is quite important to pursuing a successful and highly specialised career in building and construction. Remember that if you successfully complete a joinery apprenticeship, you can work in both the commercial and residential sectors of the building industry and this increases the work opportunities that are available to you.

However, as an apprentice joiner, you must not forget that if you are to gain entry into a construction worksite, you have to complete the OHS induction Training (White Card) successfully.

With proper training as an apprentice carpenter and an apprentice joiner, you should be able to work safely in the construction industry and thus propel your career to great heights.
