Apprenticeships and traineeships can lead you to a wide variety of different jobs. However, how do you choose where to start when you don’t know where you’ll end up? It may sound a little juvenile but there is value in going back to those early childhood days when you used to say “when I grow up I want to be a……” In this post we look at a variety of apprenticeships and the jobs you could work in once you’ve completed your apprenticeship.
Commercial Cook
Once you’ve completed your apprenticeship in commercial cookery there are huge career opportunities available to you. You will have the opportunity to aim a career as a cook, chef or kitchen hand in diverse workplaces, such as:
- Patisseries
- Cruise liners
- Restaurants
- Coffee shops
- Taverns
- International hotels
- Catering firms.
Every restaurant, hotel or event is different so you will have to be flexible in different kitchens and you will meet other cultures.

Want to walk, talk and work with the animals? With this apprenticeship or training you can become a:
- Zoo keeper
- Wildlife parks keeper
- Theme parks or sanctuary keeper
- Wildlife carer or rescuer
Carpenter
After completing your carpentry apprenticeships you could start a career as a:
- Finish carpenter/ joiner
- Traditional carpenter’s tools
- Trim carpenter specialising in moulding and trim
- Cabinetmaker is a carpenter who does fine and detailed work, specialising in the making of cabinets
- Scenic carpenter in film-making, TV, and the theatre builds and dismantles temporary scenery and sets
- Framer is a carpenter that builds the skeletal structure or framework of buildings
- Form work carpenter creates the shuttering and false work used in concrete construction
- Green carpentry is the specialisation in the use of friendly, energy and sustainable
Systems Electrician or Electrical Mechanic
Becoming an electrician allows you to work in specialised areas of the electro technology Industry including control, energy supply, fire protection, installation, maritime installation, mining, plant servicing, process, security and signalling. Upon completing your apprenticeship there is a wide variety of job opportunities including:
- Building and maintaining substations
- Assisting emergency service officers to restore electrical power
- Installing metering and associated equipment
- Designing and drawing electrical layouts using CAD programs
- Installing and maintaining systems for controlling our electrical distribution network
Engineering Mechanic
Finishing an engineering apprenticeship gives you many different sectors where a mechanical engineers can work in, such as:
- Industry
- Graduate School
- Entrepreneur/Business Owner
- Research Labs
- Military
- Government
The following stages are most common for mechanical engineering :
- First the technical work is most important.
- After that you will develop project management and product expert knowledge.
- A senior will corporate, market, and this is where global understanding become more important.
Horticulture
Horticulture Apprenticeships and Landscaping Apprenticeships require a lot of different skills and there are many different sectors you can work in, like:
- Environmental planning
- Landscape design and construction planning
- Parks and gardens management
- Flower production
- Studying cultivation retail
- Nursery and garden
- Centre management
- Tree management / arborist
- Turf management and wholesale nursery
