As an apprentice you are expected to work with a professional in order to gain knowledge and skills in a given trade. There are various things that you can do if you are to become successful and some of these include:
- Being organised. As you start out in your apprenticeship it will help a lot if you organise your tools appropriately. You should also always undertake all tasks assigned to you in an organised manner.
- Great listening skills as well as the ability to follow instructions. Most apprenticeships require you to take instructions some of which may be given in a hurry. To be a successful apprentice, you therefore have to be ready to listen and to do that which is required effectively. If you are not sure about anything, seek clarification instead of doing the wrong thing.
- A strong work ethic. You need to show your employer and colleagues that you have a strong work ethic; you can achieve this by being prepared to show up on time and by doing all tasks that are assigned to you. No employer will be keen to take on an apprentice that gets to work late or one that is unwilling to take on duties assigned to them.
- Showing that you have the physical ability to do the job at hand. Some apprenticeships involve great physical activities such as lifting heavy loads. You therefore have to show that if you are called upon to do such duties, you will be up to the task.
- Showing that you clearly understand the apprenticeship process. Before you apply for any apprenticeship, take time to understand what it involves. This will ensure that you know exactly what to expect. It doesn’t help to take on an apprenticeship that you are not interested in.
- A positive attitude. As an apprentice, you have a lot to learn and the right attitude will help you acquire the knowledge and skills that you require.
With the qualities given above, you will no doubt become a successful apprentice.
