The ability and opportunity to earn while you complete an apprenticeship training is a great opportunity, that many people at their age, studying do not have. However, while you can earn an apprentice wage you still need to learn how to budget your finances throughout the course of your training. Each year of your training your apprentice wage will increase and when you successfully complete your training and are nationally accredited you will earn significantly more than in your first year of apprenticeship training.
Budgeting will also help you manage your apprentice wage more and keep you out of debt.
1. Identify your costs
Budgeting starts with listing down all of your expenses, first. Since you already know just how much you are earning from your apprentice wage per month, then you need to compare that with just how much you are spending per month. List down everything. Food expenses, transportation costs, mobile phone payments – you should even list down your hobbies and just how much you spend on them. Don’t leave anything out. Once you’ve identified all of your costs, total your expenses.
2. Identify your needs
Now for the slightly “painful” part. After you’ve identified just what you’ve been spending your apprentice wage on, it’s time to identify your needs and eliminate all of your unnecessary costs. Do you really need that much bandwidth on your mobile phone? Is owning a new pair of shoes each month going to make you better at your job? Your apprentice wage might not cover all of your expenses if you aren’t careful with your spending.
3. Enjoy Yourself & Spend a Little
One thing about your apprentice wage is that you really earned it. So it’s not really a bad idea to enjoy your hard-earned cash – just do it responsibly. Treat yourself a little. Maybe you do deserve a little Saturday night movie time or a night out with your mates. Enjoying the money you earned isn’t a bad thing; you just have to purchase items more responsibly. Also, treating yourself to some simple pleasures will help you appreciate your trade more.
Your apprentice wage will be much smaller than the actual wages that you are going to earn once you get accredited, but with a little discipline and some wise spending, it will go a long way in helping you finish your apprenticeship training. Also, the Australian government has put some good incentives that can help apprentices with their expenses while they are on their training. This is one of the ways that the Australian government helps apprentices during their training period, which is why not even a tight budget should keep you from earning the accreditation in the trade of your choice.
