Landscaping, gardening and horticulture is really big in Australia. It’s so big it’s actually the second largest rural production industry after wheat, with fruit and nuts comprising 52%, vegetables 31% and nursery/ornamental crops 17% of the gross value of production.

A Day in the Life of a Horticulturist
Horticulturists implement plant or landscape maintenance programmes. This job commonly involves:

  • Planning and establishing plant displays
  • Implementing revegetation projects
  • Troubleshooting irrigation systems and establishing turf.
  • Controlling plant pests, diseases and disorders

The work involves a knowledge of fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. Horticulturists work to improve crop yield, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses.

Common Requirements:

     

  • Relevant industry experience in horticulture
  • Proven ability to undertake a range of horticultural tasks
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plant collection management and the ability to identify
  • The ability to provide advice on development of horticultural works programs and to plan and deliver projects to quality outcomes
  • Well experience in supervision of team members
  • Developed interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to liaise and negotiate

A horticulturist takes care of plants wherever they may be and he/she research for methods to make a particular location conducive to plant growth. There are many types of horticulturists like:

Workweek duration:
This of course depends on the job or project, but most of the time it is 38 hrs per week, like every normal fulltime job.

Wages:

If you are an apprentice you get payed per Gardening & Landscaping Services Award. Normally an average horticulture wage is $47,467.42
