These days, the electrician profession is widely popular and in demand. However, it takes years of training to become an electrician. The first step to a career as an electrician is an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships include on and off the job training. Off the job trainings entails completing coursework through registered training organisations such as TAFE.

Electrician apprenticeships generally last 3-5 years and will involve all necessary training for the daily duties and projects, including connecting wires, testing circuits, and use of blueprints. Training will also cover the areas of mathematics, engineering basics, and safety procedures.

Some basic things you can expect to do in your day-to-day job as an electrical apprentice include:

Installation of electrical equipment

Switchboard maintenance

Installation of electrical wiring systems

Testing and connection of electrical installations

Diagnosing and repair of faults in electrical equipment

Responding to breakdown of electrical equipment

Solid knowledge in maths and science will go a long way in a career as an apprentice. If you’re still in school make sure you work hard on getting good scores in these areas. This knowledge will not only help you get a job as an electrical apprentice, it will also help you in your day to day job!

Once an apprenticeship is complete, there is a level of experience that needs to be completed and the apprentice needs to complete and pass a licensing exam.

Once this is complete, one can go on as a licensed electrician. Choosing this career path can be rewarding, though, it takes years of training and hard work to become an electrician.

TAFE has a number of apprenticeship related courses for budding electricians. Most involve a Certificate III Level of Certification.

Starting an apprenticeship as an electrician can work out really well for you. During your apprenticeship, you will be paid according to the industry award. However, once qualified and following the completion of your apprenticeship that’s when the big bucks start rolling in. The average salary for a qualified electrician is around $70.000 a year. And if you still think that is not enough: go work on an offshore oil or gas platform. If we may believe The Australian, you will be rich before you know it.

An offshore platform is often referred to as an oil platform or oil rig. This is a large structure used in to drill for oil or natural gas in the ocean. If you are working on a platform, you work in fly-in-fly-out rosters, with 7 12-hours shifts. You will live on the platform for a week and then live on the mainland for a week off.

Because an employee on a gas and oil platform rotates between day and night rosters, they get allowances for shift work. They also receive weekend penalties. And with the overtime, their annual year salary can be up to $250,000

Before you start seeing dollar signs you should know that a job on a gas and oil platform is not easy. You have to work in difficult circumstances, like warm weather and heights. It is very skilled work. It is also very isolated so you have to be able to be in confined spaces away from home for some time.

According to industry and union estimates, tradespeople working on onshore projects are capable of earning more than $150,000 a year, provided they work long hours and get paid overtime. Off-shore construction workers can earn around $150,000 a year, while qualified tradesmen can earn up to $160,000. So if you can handle the stress and are looking for a trade job, this might be an option. So what are you waiting for, get a job as a trade apprenticeship!
