Starting an apprenticeship as an electrician can work out really well for you. During your apprenticeship, you will be paid according to the industry award. However, once qualified and following the completion of your apprenticeship that’s when the big bucks start rolling in. The average salary for a qualified electrician is around $70.000 a year. An offshore platform is often referred to as an oil platform or oil rig. This is a large structure used in to drill for oil or natural gas in the ocean. If you are working on a platform, you work in fly-in-fly-out rosters, with 7 12-hours shifts. You will live on the platform for a week and then live on the mainland for a week off.
Because an employee on a gas and oil platform rotates between day and night rosters, they get allowances for shift work. They also receive weekend penalties. And with the overtime, their annual year salary can be up to $250,000
Before you start seeing dollar signs you should know that a job on a gas and oil platform is not easy. You have to work in difficult circumstances, like warm weather and heights. It is very skilled work. It is also very isolated so you have to be able to be in confined spaces away from home for some time.
According to industry and union estimates, tradespeople working on onshore projects are capable of earning more than $150,000 a year, provided they work long hours and get paid overtime. Off-shore construction workers can earn around $150,000 a year, while qualified tradesmen can earn up to $160,000.
