Butchers select, cut, trim and prepare meat for sale or supply. This apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete.
Duties May Include:
- cut, trim and shape cuts of meat to size
- pack and store products for display & sale
- assemble and operate mincers, grinders, mixers, patty-forming or sausage-forming machines
- use correct detergents & sanitisers to prevent food poisoning & contamination of premises & equipment
- collect payment for sales
- prepare marinated meats, value-added & ready-to-cook dishes
- advise customers about cuts, how to cook, store & the nutritional aspects of meat.
Personal Requirements:
- interested in practical and manual work
- physically fit
- good hand-eye coordination
- good health
- good interpersonal skills
Education & Training:
- No minimum, must be successful in the apprenticepower aptitude test
