Butchers select, cut, trim and prepare meat for sale or supply. This apprenticeship takes 4 years to complete.

Duties May Include:

  • cut, trim and shape cuts of meat to size
  • pack and store products for display & sale
  • assemble and operate mincers, grinders, mixers, patty-forming or sausage-forming machines
  • use correct detergents & sanitisers to prevent food poisoning & contamination of premises & equipment
  • collect payment for sales
  • prepare marinated meats, value-added & ready-to-cook dishes
  • advise customers about cuts, how to cook, store & the nutritional aspects of meat.

Personal Requirements:

  • interested in practical and manual work
  • physically fit
  • good hand-eye coordination
  • good health
  • good interpersonal skills

Education & Training:

  • No minimum, must be successful in the apprenticepower aptitude test
